2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata Update

Following rumors of Mazda’s plans to install a hybrid powertrain in its next MX-5, company representatives confirmed in a June email to Motor1.com about plans to electrify the beloved roadster. Automaker Zoom-Zoom hasn’t said how much the NE-generation sports car will get an electric boost, but it now appears that Autocar is revealing some secrets.

The fifth generation Miata is expected to switch to the SkyActiv-X engine, a four-cylinder unit with a small supercharger developed to push air into the cylinders. As shown in other applications, gasoline plants benefit from spark-controlled compression ignition for better performance and lower emissions. A 48-volt mild hybrid system is on the agenda as well to cut fuel consumption further and meet stricter regulations.

According to Mazda, the SkyActiv-X’s 2.0-liter engine produces up to 30 percent more torque than the equivalent SkyActiv-G 2.0 unit while reducing fuel consumption by 30 percent. Interestingly, a page on the Japanese automaker’s website dedicated to the new engine states that the powertrain was built for “real-world efficiency, not just to do well on government test courses.”

The SkyActiv-X is already installed on a number of models, including the Mazda3 and CX-3, where it “pulls like a turbodiesel, but spins like a regular gasoline engine.” The MX-5 appears to be next in line to get the 2.0-liter engine, while Autocar has doubts about the availability of a smaller 1.5-liter unit in the future. Alternatively, the 2.0-liter SkyActiv-X could be the only engine, but it’s available in a number of conditions.

The manual gearbox is taken for granted, and so is Mazda’s attempts to keep weight to a minimum. For this reason, the MX-5 wouldn’t be a full hybrid/hybrid, let alone an EV. The battery would add a lot of weight and spoil the driving experience that Miata widely believed to be the gold standard.

As far as the design is concerned, the report goes on to say we’ll see a new shaped grille and angular headlights, but without making the MX-5 look too aggressive. Inside, the small sports car is said to use more luxurious materials, a digital instrument cluster, and more modern controls in the same vein as other recent products to denote Mazda’s high-end market.

The NE generation of the Miata is expected to arrive sometime in 2024.

2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata Rumor

The next generation of the MX-5 is said to be built around the SkyActiv-X engine, which means it won’t be an EV, PHEV or even a hybrid. Expect micro-hybrid technology inside, which includes things like a Stop-Start system, a variable oil pump, and other such items.

It would be interesting to see the SkyActiv-X engine in the MX-5, as this unit differs in operation from the SkyActiv-G, but Mazda engineers had plenty of time to tinker with it. It’s worth noting that the SkyActiv-X unit actually comes with 30 percent more torque than the best SkyActiv-G motor in the MX-5 lineup.

In addition, the SkyActiv-X is not offered in a low-displacement variant, as is the case with the SkyActiv-G, which can be obtained in a 1.5-liter variant on the MX-5. With this aspect, Mazda will likely raise the price of the entry-level Miata. This is a troubling idea, because the MX-5 is the cheapest car money can buy.

The good news is that the MX-5/Miata will still be around and we’ll see it in production for a few years after its introduction. It is not clear when Mazda will launch the next generation of Miata on the market, but the Britons at Autocar expect it will be in 2024.

This means that the Japanese brand will offer it for sale in all European markets until a stop-sale order is placed on the new combustion engine vehicle. With that being said, it is to the satisfaction of many that the Mazda MX-5/ Miata NE, the latter of which ends as the interior codename for the fifth generation of Japanese cars, will continue the tradition that began in 1989 and will feature a gasoline engine in a lightweight package.

Mazda’s commitment to the Miata and the internal combustion power plant has been confirmed by company officials in discussions with the UK. Remember, just because the NE-generation Miata/MX-5 continues to be offered with a petrol engine, that doesn’t mean the roadster will never convert to an EV. This aspect will come later, and hopefully, the battery technology will reach a level that also offers a lighter weight with sufficient capacity.
