Technology for Life is about improving the interaction between humans and machines, thus reducing the carbon footprint. Finally, Tension for Serenity extols how opposing forces can work together in harmony and lead to further technological and design advancement.
Hyundai’s Global Electric Platform (E-GMP) isn’t anything new in the electric vehicle market like the 2022 Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Genesis GV60 already use it. It’s basically a proprietary skateboard-style electric vehicle (BEV) platform battery which means the wheels hug the corners leaving a ground sink for the battery. It also means you get a roomy cabin as the wide wheelbase makes the front and rear overhangs shorter, reducing the exterior dimensions. This lowers the center of gravity while making room for a large flat floor that opens up ample space to accommodate rear seat passengers and luggage.
Dubbed the Kia Telluride as a zero-emissions variant, the upcoming EV9 will become Kia’s largest electric vehicle with up to seven seats in a flexible and generous three-row arrangement. Kia plans to phase out animal skins in all future vehicles. So, the upcoming EV9, like the EV6, also features a variety of eco-friendly materials like recycled plastic bottles, wool fibers, floor-drying fishing nets, and even vegan leather.
According to the 2021 concept, the 2024 Kia EV9 will be 194 inches long, 81 inches wide and 70 inches high and will have a wheelbase of 122 inches. Kia claims the new electric SUV will offer up to 300 miles of range and use the latest super-fast charging technology that can recharge from 10% to 80% in just about 20-30 minutes. . That’s thanks to the EV9’s 350kW charger, which adds about 62 miles of range in just six minutes of quick charging.
In addition to a host of squishy features inside and out, the 2024 Kia EV9 also features a hood-mounted solar panel, retractable roof rails for improved aerodynamics, and an interior made from sustainable materials. Now Kia will introduce a larger electric SUV in just a few months. The Kia EV9 will be one of the first full-size three-row electric SUVs on the market that doesn’t cost a lot — look at you Tesla and Rivian. The original EV9 concept from 2021 featured a boxy design similar to the Telluride with futuristic elements borrowed from the EV6, while Kia boasts rough cargo and range numbers that rival some of the best. But we won’t see a final production version until next year. Until then, here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming Kia EV9.
What will it look like?
The production Kia EV9 shouldn’t look all that different from the concept that debuted in 2021. Based on spy photos that have circulated since then, it’s clear the EV9 will retain its tapered shape and square components, albeit with some production-friendly cues. We reached out to our rendering artist to try and bring the EV9 concept to life—and if these renderings are any indication, the EV9 should look sharp. It uses more production-ready headlights, wheels, and other features, but retains some of the unique lighting from the original concept. Current Kia models, such as the Sorento and Niro, use similar LED lighting, so the EV9 will likely use some of the same elements.
The EV9 should also have that Telluride feel in its DNA, since both models offer three rows of seating. And we fully expect semi-rugged options, like the X-Line found in most recent Kia SUVs, to carry over to the EV9. But don’t expect Rivian levels of off-road capability.
What’s under the tarpaulin?
The Kia EV9 will be fully electric, as the name suggests. It will potentially use the E-GMP global electric standard versatile platform (E-GMP) for Kia and Hyundai and will provide 240 kW of DC fast charging capacity. Things like power, range and performance still have to be determined, but initial estimates suggest the Kia EV9 will offer about 300 miles of range from EPA estimates and should be able to hit 60 mph in about five seconds.
how much does it cost?
The Kia EV9 is expected to start at around $50,000 when it goes on sale next year. That would make it more expensive than the current Telluride starting (which costs $34,725 with Destination), but considering most Telluride trims easily hit $50,000 with options, the EV9 could be an attractive alternative depending on what comes standard.
The Kia EV9 will appear in production form early next year. Kia has confirmed a Q1 release date — a possible spring — with plans to sell the electric SUV later that year.
What will compete?
There are currently only a few other three-row electric SUVs on the market. The Rivian R1S, Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, and Tesla Models Y and X all offer three rows of seating. But other than the Model Y, which starts at $65,990 at the time of this writing, the remaining three lines are luxury cars priced north of $75,000.
Kia may be the first to market with a three-row electric vehicle that will appeal to a broader audience until alternatives arrive. Vinfast plans to bring its three-row VF9 to the US with a starting price of $55,500, and we know that the Volkswagen ID.Buzz electric bus is coming to the US and will cost around $45,000 to start with. But none of that will arrive before EV9.
