However, the Hyundai group as a whole has adapted well to the conditions, and is poised to become a world leader in electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, with the introduction of Hyundai Nexo Hydrogen Fuel cell EV, advanced specialized electric vehicles such as the IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6, as well as the latest electric vehicles. Porsche is investing an unspecified 10 percent stake, Pinin-farina shares the C_Two platform for its electric vehicle, Jaguar leverages it to convert the E-type Zero, and Aston Martin is relying on Rimac to provide the kinetic energy recovery system for the Valkyrie. This all sounds attractive but seems far from what most people can tolerate.
What distinguishes the new partnership with the Korean auto giant is that its new projects will also include realistic cars. Hyundai is known for being pragmatic when it comes to investing and when it drops $90 million, you know it’s going to make something of it.
Rimac went straight into the business, and within one year of the partnership, the RM20e was born. Launched in 2012, the RM Series project car is what Hyundai calls a “Rolling Lab” concept car, where Hyundai’s high-performance technologies are developed and tested for commercial and racing applications. This program gave birth to mass-produced sports cars such as the Veloster N and Elantra N, the TCR race car and the E-TCR electric race car. The latest series, the RM20e is powered by an 800V engine, which produces a maximum power of 596 kW or 810 hp, plus torque of 960 Nm or 708 lb-ft that can reach 0-100 km/h in less than 3 seconds, and 200 km /o in less than 10 seconds.
This giant was created to be the basis for two high-performance electric vehicles. The first is the N-branded high-performance hatchback. We’ve already seen an example of this in the form of the Kia EV6 GT. Apparently, out of the $90 million investment, 18 million of which came from Kia, and they rightfully claim the title of the first high-performance electric car from a Korean brand. The EV6 GT is a twin-engine beast with 577 horsepower and 546 lb-ft capable of sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h or 62 mph in just 3.5 seconds.
This version of the Hyundai Cross is expected to be faster and tougher. The N version of the IONIQ 5 will come with more power, close to 600 hp, and add the usual N-exclusive Trick features to turn an ordinary family SUV into a true supercar.
The second vehicle emerging from the partnership with Rimac will be realized in a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle. And this time, it will be a real supercar. The hydrogen-powered supercar will be a one-off vehicle that does not depend on any other, and represents the first halo car from the Korean company to demonstrate its prowess in electric vehicle technology.
While Hyundai hasn’t made any official announcements about the halo yet, we know it’s coming soon. This is why. First, Albert Biermann, Head of Vehicle Development at Hyundai Motor Group, pointed out a prototype of a hydrogen fuel cell that could be combined with the E-GMP platform, and electric power system to create the next race car while introducing the Elantra N. Also, a test mule was spotted for such a vehicle in Korea earlier this year, which is a clear indication of its imminent arrival.

The space constraints imposed by the need to accommodate a battery pack along with a hydrogen electric generator can pose some technical challenges, as cars like the Nexo do not have a battery pack, but instead run the engine directly.

The hydrogen tank appears to be located above the electric power system at the rear with an electric generator up front to balance the weight, just as Berman explained in his discussion. His new Ford 9 race car, once completed, this 1,500kg or 3,307 lb race car is expected to be the world’s fastest fuel cell electric race car, with a top speed of 186 mph or 300 km/h, and a 0 -60 mph in less than 3 seconds. The car’s two fuel cell systems will have a maximum power of 805 horsepower, or 600 kilowatts, delivered to all four wheels.
Does it look similar to the RM20e specs? Well, that’s probably because the same power from this project car will also make its way into the proposed halo car, and the Forze 9 was only offered as another pre-market test mule.
This certainly presents a challenge for the Biermann team because it is known that the E-GMP can only hold a maximum of 600 horses as it was originally designed.
Because of these hurdles, we can’t say at this time when the new Genesis Halo will be introduced, but we hope it will be soon. Genesis will enter the European market, where all things fast and luxury originate, and what could create more buzz than the first hydrogen production supercar.
With the impressive performance based on the RM20e and the design based on Essentia, it will be a truly exceptional car that will rewrite the history of automobiles, especially that of the Korean manufacturer with a rather short history.
