2024 BMW M4 Update
The BMW M4 CSL 2023 will make its debut at Italy’s 2022 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este from May 20-22, and a new teaser trailer gives us what to expect. As a refresher, CSL stands for “Coupe Sport Lightweight”. The last BMW to get a CSL version was the E46 M3 generation, in limited numbers of just 1,400 units between 2002 and 2004. We’ve been expecting a new CSL since 2017, when Frank van Mel, president of BMW M, said new CSL models were coming, including In that one would replace the M4. Previous generation GTS.
Teaser footage, as well as spy footage of our prototype, suggests that the M4 CSL will get an extended front wing, a duck-style rear wing, and a new design of the lower air intakes on the front end. However, it does retain BMW’s controversial new grille. The E46 M3 CSL and M4 GTS both have the cab stripped down to main sections in an effort to save weight, so this will likely be the case with the M4 CSL as well.
The CSL will likely keep the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 from other versions of the M4, but perhaps more than 473 hp from the standard M4 and 503 hp from the M4 Competition. With the newer M4 (and M3) adding all-wheel drive as an option for the first time, it will be interesting to see if BMW does the same with the M4 CSL. All-wheel drive is rear-biased, but in keeping with its tougher job, the CSL can handle the old rear-wheel drive to save weight.
Stay tuned for more details when the M4 CSL debuts later this month, and stay tuned for the plans for the M3 CSL in the near future.

2024 BMW M4 Rumor
BMW has launched (probably) thousands of special editions since the company’s founding in 1916, but only a couple of the light sport coupe models. The latest version appeared in 2003 as the M3 E46 CSL, while the previous one dates back to 1972 when the 3.0 CSL was introduced as a special homologation. Fast forward to 2022, the iconic successor returns to the more luxurious M4 G82. It premieres May 20, so there’s still plenty of time for the teaser to show.
M Red accents took to Instagram across the underside of the sports coupe to show off the smoky look of the M4 CSL. We saw amazing coloration in a recent spy shot where eye-catching red was applied to the calipers and bucket seats along with the carbon fiber casing. Additionally, the prototype features a red shift knob, stitching and an embroidered “CSL” logo on the bottom of the center console.
Separately, our investigators captured a fully camouflaged prototype with a mediocre soundtrack during last minute testing. Although disguised, the duck tail spoiler is fully visible and serves as a visual addition to the previous CSL model. Expect a lot of changes in the M4 competition as BMW is expected to offer a two-seat track-focused engine. Removing the back seat would be part of a basic diet to lose more than 100 pounds.
Don’t look for a manual transmission as the M4 CSL will be automatic only, with power flowing exclusively to the rear wheels. Speaking of which, the S58 is rumored to have made a huge leap to around 550 horsepower from the competition’s 503 horsepower. To add to the excitement, an interesting rumor suggests that BMW is planning to honor the CSL based on the M4 with 600 hp as one of the highlights of M’s 50th anniversary celebrations in 2022.
When it launches next week, expect a great price for the special limited edition. Fans may have to pay six figures and fight for 1,000 cars just to secure what we hear.
