In terms of performance, the A5 with its more powerful powertrain manages to hit 60 mph in 5 seconds while the A5 Sportback 40 with its 231-horsepower unit tracks down in 1.4 seconds. The RS5 goes to 60 mph in under 4.0 seconds (3.8 to be exact) while the relatively weak S5 runs a 0-60 mph sprint in 4.3 seconds. We don’t expect things to change much for 2022, and potential buyers should look forward to the same model lineup.

2023 Audi A5 Rumor

Audi boss Bram Schot has made it his mission to reduce the complexity of the model as he previously said the company was “engaged in many projects” and that had to change.

At the time, he announced that Audi would focus on “key projects” and study its portfolio for “customer relevance”. This effort eliminated the TT – which will be replaced by a “new Emotional model in the same price range” – and it appears that more cars are on their way to cutting.

In an interview with Autocar, Schott said, “Do we want to have a regular sports sedan? We are currently discussing this for some models.” While Schott declined to reveal the vehicle he was talking about, it is likely the A5 Sportback as the A7 Sportback was recently redesigned and Audi is finalizing plans for the next generation A4 which is expected to arrive in 2022 or 2023.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard rumors of the A5 Sportback’s demise either as previous reports have suggested that the A5 and A7 Sportbacks will eventually be replaced by a single, five-door hatchback based on the MLB platform.

That’s still not certain, but the A5 Sportback isn’t as popular as the standard A4. Audi didn’t specify sales for specific models, but the A4 lineup — which consists of the A4, S4 and A4 Allroad — was responsible for 17,657 sales in the United States as of August of this year. The A5 range – which includes the A5, S5 and RS5 Coupe, A5 and S5 Cabriolets as well as the A5 and S5 Sportbacks – was responsible for 15,676 sales during the same period. Given that the A5 family is much larger than the A4, Sportback sales make up only a fraction of those 15,676 units.

Given this, it wouldn’t be too surprising if Audi focused its efforts on the next-generation A4 and bypassed the A5 Sportback altogether. It’s not official, but it might make sense especially at a time when consumers are embracing crossovers and BMW has discontinued the somewhat similar Gran Turismo 3-Series.
